Originally released in 2004, MF Doom's MM.FOOD is hailed as a classic hip-hop album full of inventive production, remarkable wordplay, and unique themes. Overall, MM.FOOD is both a social commentary and a piece of social satire, showcasing MF Doom's ability to blend serious themes with his unique, playful lyrical style. Kenny Dorham�added stellar entries to the catalogs of Blue Note, Riverside, and New Jazz throughout the 1950s as he solidified his reputation as a leading trumpeter and composer on the jazz scene. Vinyl LP pressing. Recorded in 1955 for producer Tom Wilson's short-lived Boston-based label Transition Records, Byrd's Eye View was trumpeter Donald Byrd's first issued recording as a leader. The date presented Byrd at the helm of what was then the current line-up of The Jazz Messengers with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Horace Silver, bassist Doug Watkins, and drummer Art Blakey. Local Boston area trumpeter Joe Gordon joins the band for some friendly brass sparring with Byrd on several numbers, further adding to the album's jovial air of a blowing session. Everyone is in fine form on this 5-song set with Side A consisting of an extended stroll through Watkins' laid-back original "Doug's Blues" followed by some inspired trading between Byrd and Gordon on "El Sino." A beautiful rendition of the ballad "Everything Happens To Me" and two swinging Mobley pieces comprise Side B, bringing this highly-enjoyable date to a close.

Ohio Players is The Black Keys� fourth album in five years, a momentum with a simple explanation, Auerbach says: �We never stopped recording.� There was his and Carney�s reunion, after a five-year hiatus, on 2019�s "Let�s Rock�, then the 2021 blast of Mississippi-hill-country covers, Delta Kream. A rapid-fire follow-up of new originals, 2022�s Dropout Boogie, featured the duo working with outside writers for the first time: Greg Cartwright of Memphis rockers Reigning Sound and Angelo Petraglia, who has worked with Kings of Leon and the teenage Taylor Swift. �We'd never worked harder to make a record,� Dan Auerbach says. �It's never taken us this long to make an album. We took our time and did it right.�

�What we wanted to accomplish with this record was make something that was fun,� Patrick Carney says. �And something that most bands 20 years into their career don�t make, which is an approachable, fun record that is also cool.�
While making Ohio Players, a title inspired by the legendary Dayton, OH funk band of the same name, The Black Keys were also DJing dance parties in cities around the world that they called �record hangs,� spinning 45s from their own eclectic and growing collections. It�s dangerous to put Illiterate Light in a box, especially with the release of their new album, Arches. Are they a guitar-driven indie rock duo? Kaleidoscopic neo-psychedelia? Synth-kissed, harmony-laden folk? What does one do with an album beginning with �fake tits and diet coke,� then pivoting to train derailments in rural Ohio and never-ending black holes? These prolific farmers-turned-rockers have captured the energy of their live shows�fans crowd-surfing, moshing, crying, and crooning�and infused it into their latest release.

�We�ve always been shape shifters, moving between heavy, dark distortion and gentle sweet fingerpicking, writing aggressive songs, introspective songs, and love songs, exploding and embracing,� reflects singer-guitarist Jeff Gorman. �Smashing it all together used to feel strange, but now there's a glue between everything we do. Illiterate Light�s third album, Arches, is not a passageway but an arrival. �We�re no longer striving to define a sound,� said drummer Jake Cochran. �We�re leaning into sides of ourselves that have felt off-limits, sticking to what feels right rather than concerning ourselves with comparison.� Out November 1 via Thirty Tigers, the record is bursting with thunderous anthems, biting lyrics, and lush harmonies.

The band originated in the Shenandoah Valley in 2015 when multi-instrumentalists Gorman and Cochran began playing music together while working on an organic farm. Eventually, they left the farm to focus on music, adopting the moniker Illiterate Light from a Wilco lyric. After several years of non-stop touring, they signed with Atlantic Records and released their eponymous full-length debut in late 2019. Two years later, they signed with Thirty Tigers and, in 2023, issued their critically acclaimed LP, Sunburned. Shortly after, they released two additional EPs, making Arches their fourth release in two years.
Arches was recorded in two very different locations: small-town Appalachia at Gorman�s home studio and Hollywood, CA at Sunset Sound with producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, Beck, The Killers). �We wanted the best of both worlds,� says Gorman. �We spent several days with Joe at Sunset. To record vocals in the same live room as so many of my heroes�Neil Young, Paul McCartney, Dylan�was unreal. I knew I was in a holy place.� The LA session was paired with sessions in Virginia, where Gorman and Cochran co-produced the bulk of the record with longtime collaborator Danny Gibney. In their hometown, they experimented with soaring instrumental journeys and had friends sit in on the sessions to keep things lively.

�Having our community stop by the sessions kept us on our toes�we haven�t been able to do that in the past. It helped connect us to the feeling of our live show,� recalls Cochran. Illiterate Light�s live performances, described by the Washington Post as �massive,� feature Gorman on one foot, hammering bass on a foot-pedal synth, shredding big guitar riffs, and spitting out song after song while Cochran matches Gorman harmony for harmony, dancing with his standing drum kit, teetering on the edge of the stage only to dive head first into his next solo.

Arches is the closest you can get to their live show, with heavier songs like �I Ride Alone� and �Bloodlines� encapsulating the best of the writhing, uninhibited front-row experience. The keystone of the album, �Norfolk Southern,� crashes in with Gorman belting, �Here comes the Norfolk Southern / It's off the tracks / and heading for you,� with Cochran chanting, �break, break, break, break� to the ghost of the train that derailed in 2023 in East Palestine, Ohio, releasing 10,000 gallons of hazardous materials into the atmosphere. The song also serves as a metaphor for Gorman�s own turbulent feelings. �I certainly wanted to shine a light on the environmental catastrophe. But strangely, some days I feel just like that Norfolk Southern, barreling out of control at warp speed.�
Gorman lets the lyrics take control. Showing up relentlessly, day after day, to his home studio dubbed �The Bookhouse� (a tribute to David Lynch's Twin Peaks), he can�t predict what will arise. For the album's first track, �Payphone,� the opening lyrics were a surprise to Gorman: �Fake tits and diet coke / Full of undefeated hope / You are the only one I trust.� The jangly and groovy album opener is a pep talk between a woman named Big Red and her man as he faces crippling self-doubt and is self-medicating. She comforts him during a time of despair on a phone call that continues to drop.

Another relationship study, �Montauk,� is a cold beachside dance under the full moon inspired by the central question in Gorman�s favorite movie, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. �Do we go for it again�even though we're destined to fail?� he asks. �For me, the answer is a resounding yes.�
�All the Stars Are Burning Out� continues in that reflective vein. �It�s a throwback song, about getting high, going for a drive, dreaming up your future. You�re looking at that wide open black sky of bright stars, and they�re so beautiful and inspiring, and they make you want to follow your dreams. And yet all those stars eventually burn out. It�s a song about going for it even though life is impermanent and full of change,� Gorman said.

The saying goes, �arches never sleep.� Designed to distribute weight evenly, arches naturally rebalance as the structure around them shifts over time. Illiterate Light�s Arches exists within this metaphor in many ways. The album marks a period of artistic strength, a balancing act of identity and possibility. To listen to Arches is to plant yourself within the arch, to stand in the threshold between two worlds and gaze into Gorman and Cochran�s constant motion forward.

After seven years, Japandroids have returned with Fate and Alcohol, their fourth and final full-length. Written in part while the Vancouver duo-guitarist-vocalist Brian King and drummer-vocalist David Prowse-were touring behind their 2017 ANTI- debut, Near to the Wild Heart of Life, the album is at once a return to form and a thrilling step forward, testament to the sort of chemistry that they've honed over the course of 18 years and hundreds of shows side-by-side. Their aim was simply to write songs that they'd enjoy playing live, without sacrificing any of the nuance or ambition that marked their previous effort. Nowhere on this record is that more deeply felt than lead single "Chicago," a song whose sheer momentum feels inevitable and true-from the inherent romance of it's opening chords to the series of snare-led explosions that see it through. Drawn from two sessions recorded in December 1969 and December 1970, and not first released until 1995, Kofi found Donald Byrd in the early stages of his transformation from top-notch hard bop trumpeter to fusion pioneer. Byrd had already begun to move away from a pure hard bop sound with his album Fancy Free in the Spring of 1969, and the two Kofi sessions straddled the recording of his adventurous fusion album Electric Byrd. The first Kofi session subtly explored a new realm of sounds on Byrd�s originals �Kofi� and �Fufu� with producer Duke Pearson�s electric piano shimmering underneath textured arrangements featuring Lew Tabackin on flute and tenor saxophone, Frank Foster on tenor saxophone, William Campbell on trombone, Ron Carter on acoustic bass, Bob Cranshaw on electric bass, and Airto Moreira on drums. The following 1970 session produced two more vibey Byrd originals��Perpetual Love� and �Elmina��adding Wally Richardson on guitar and Mickey Roker on drums with Moreira playing percussion along with Dom Um Rom�o.

Hippo Campus' singer Jake Luppen had been listening to the band's work as they rolled around the country, trying to tease out how much work remained. All of it, he soon decided. Obfuscated by the need to sound sophisticated and the overwhelming ambition to make the best Hippo Campus LP ever, a deeper and more profound record that reflected how their lives were changing. But Luppen and all of Hippo Campus decided they didn't actually like what they were making.So they called an audible. They were going to start over. And three months later, the four-member core of Hippo Campus rendezvoused with longtime collaborator Caleb Wright and producer Brad Cook at Sonic Ranch, a playground-like studio complex on the Texas border. They gave themselves 10 days to cut the tracks they liked best, to make something to which they could commit at last. Less than two weeks later, they emerged with what they'd given themselves half a decade to make-Flood, or the best album Hippo Campus has ever made. The sentiments on Flood are raw, real, and unguarded, a testament to Hippo Campus dropping preconceptions of how they had to sound after so many failed attempts to re-record these songs. They wiped the slate clean, starting over without beliefs about what Hippo Campus or this record needed to be. Still, sophistication lurks in subtle key and tempo changes, in the almost innate shifts that a band of longtime best friends can tap after so much time spent helping to shape one another's musical language. (Also, is there any other refrain ever that manages to make the phrase "so god-damned fucking" sound so catchy and natural?) But in the final verse, with his voice breaking through a scrim of distortion, he stumbles upon a new credo: "Wait, I wanna give this life all that I have in me." That is precisely what Hippo Campus have done with Flood after realizing it doesn't take a lifetime-or, well, five years-to do just that.
